Hello again! Well, in spite of being so busy with my daughter and her new business venture, I still do find time to be in the studio. I think I would go crazy if I wasn't able to! It's just such a part of my life. This is Papillion- which is French for Butterfly. I thought it was a fitting name for her. Hope you enjoy seeing her!

I have been gone so much lately! Finally I have been able to be in the studio for a bit- this is Sweet-Heart- and she is tucked into a darling handpainted china dish I found while out antiquing one day. Love those vintage and antique shops, don't you? I thought it would look good with her sitting outside the dish and fill the dish with Hershey's Kisses or some other prettily wrapped candy. Why not, right?

I am working on several new pieces right now- and using them to prepare for the online classes I will be teaching starting this month. Be watching for more information!

Well, it was a great trip! I'm so glad I decided to take some extra time to enjoy the Florida weather. It was fantastic every day we were there! The IDEX show was great fun as well- we had several artists participating in our booth. Thank you to all of you who made the trip to be there and make a great showing! Well, I need to get a whipping with a wet noodle. I've been away from my blog for months now! Such a busy time... my daughter started her own business in November and I've been helping her with that- then she got married on January 1st so we had that to prepare for.. but really, that's no excuse for not checking in here with my blog friends!

Now my attention is fixed on the IDEX show in Orlando at the end of the month, I am looking forward to spending a few weeks in the warm temps of Florida and meeting many of my fellow artists at the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek hotel and show. Then from there I head off to California for another dose of warm weather, then to Las Vegas! I cannot wait! Such fun!! and it will make this long cold snowy winter fly by. In the meantime, I have one teacup fairy listed on ebay, my only listing for January. This is Leighton!

A Dragonfly fairy-"Torian"

Here is Torian. She's a dragonfly fairy- sitting on a branch. You might wonder how I got her to fit that branch so nicely, well, lets just say the branch fits her! It's made from 8 and 16 ga wire, covered in part with epoxy, and the a full overlay of a flexible clay. It's almost rubbery! I've never done one like it- the possibilities are endless...

It seems like forever since I've been here. So many things going on in my life right now! I am going and coming and then going again... you can understand, I am sure. But I did manage to get a sculpture done for ebay. This is Keesa, a tiny fairy sleeping on top of a mushroom cap. As sweet as she can be, I think!

Anyway, in the near future I will be announcing some exciting new projects and plans I am working on. Check back for more information!

Hi Everyone! Gosh, it's great to be back. I was gone for over a week again- seems that's all I am up to lately is being away from home! Hard to get my work done, but I am doing my best. This is Phaedra-she is kneeling under an arching branch of crystal berries. I thought the branch added a cool dimension to this piece.

Home from my excursion West!

Back again! I am happy to be home but had a simply wonderful time visiting California. I taught a week long seminar in Napa Valley- was so much fun! The gals worked hard and everyone had a fairy mostly finished by class end. Then, off to visit other parts farther south-such fun traveling! Here is a photo of a sunset I was lucky enough to catch while in the Mexican Riviera.

Also, while there I completed a sculpt I call Korbella, after the Korbel Winery we visited in Napa Valley. Here is a photo of Korbella! She is currently listed on ebay.

Trying to keep busy in the studio...

But yet there is so many other things to get done also, isn't there!! and Fall is right around the corner, which means snow shoveling can't be too far behind! YIKES! Well, no sense in rushing the seasons, I will enjoy the fall weather because this is my absolute favorite time of year.

This next month I will be off to California, the Napa Valley area, to teach a week long seminar there on sculpting and finish details. Really looking forward to that.

Meet Little Elkie!

This is Elkie, A Flower Fairy, #5 in the series. I had a blast creating this little imp! She has perky pigtails, and I used soft viscose for her bangs so they would hug her darling little imp face just like I hoped they would.

I used these wings for a silk wing tutorial I created, as soon as I get on the ball, I will post that too. Summer just has a way of taking up alot of our time, doesn't it! Anyway, hope you all are doing well, and enjoy your days!

Howdy!

Well, I've been gone a lot lately again- but I have been home just long enough to get this lovely sweet fae ready to list on ebay this week, Aurelia. She is seated on the edge of an antique dish that I have transformed into a bubble bath for her. This is the first piece like this I have ever done- and it was a lot of fun to create!

Back to Winter, AGAIN!

Well, even though April is right around the corner, our whole world here is covered once again, in snow!! This morning the view out the window looked like a well shaken snow globe! I could hardly see across the street. But, the good news is after shoveling, the walks and driveway are clear again. At least at this time of year it melts quickly. There is hope for us here yet!

This week I had a fun project. This is Leni Jo (I took the name from a Debbie McComber book I'm reading right now, "Between Friends") and she is admiring herself in her mirror! Can't you just picture this scene in a little girl's bedroom? I know my granddaughter Ella LOVES to wear all these fun costumes.

What a terrible blogger I am!! I can't believe I haven't posted here since November. I must vow to be more attentive to my blogging.

I have been working- doing as much as my little fingers can do- and mostly it's enjoyable! This week I did a fairy in an interesting pose, a crouching fairy, and I named her Jeisa. I am really pleased with how she turned out. Hope you enjoy seeing her too!

I am working on updating my website too- and I have a major magazine article coming out in May! I will let you know more when the time gets closer. Don't want to tell all of my surprises!

A commission "Work in Progress" series for you!

Hello!

I thought I would share a process with you- this is Zunel, and she was a commission I did a few months ago. The customer wanted a fairy with long, Rapunzel type hair, so I saved the longest fibers I had for her. They were soft, luxurious and about 14" long. I dyed them a very pale blond. Here are the fibers I was dyeing and a spool of thread to show a size comparison.

This is what Zunel looked like finished: And here is how she started. This is a wire armature, covered with clay and baked. Notice the segmented limbs- this allows me to pose her as I am working on her. The base is alabaster.

Upper body is now done and baked. Her breasts are pushed into that position because she will be wearing a bustier later.
What a messy work area!! Good grief. Anyway, the time is getting late but I am working on her lower body now. While doing that, I am careful not to handle her face, as the detail work is done there.
Now that gorgeous hair is on, her panties and tiny ballet slippers are also done. Now the fun begins! I LOVE COSTUMING! The poor dear needs to do something will all that hair so I can get her dressed! I called this a Bad Hair Day for Zunel. The customer wanted her absolutely dripping in Swarovski crystals and rhinestones. I spent hours and hours doing the beadwork on this sculpture. I was pleased with how she turned out- so was the customer!

Her wings were silk, hand painted and then fully covered with iridescent sheer glitter. By coating the wings with a sealer/varnish, then sprinkling on the glitter while the varnish was wet, it adhered the glitter and stiffened up the wings in one step. There were hundreds more crystals added after the photo above was taken. At the very top of this blog entry, that is what she looked like at completion.

Power in sculpting...

There is, you know. It is a powerful experience to sculpt- it can also be very humbling as well. This is Bianca. She originally was planned as a standing sculpture, but I wasn't satisfied with that so I decided to completely change her pose. The power part... :)

Then the task began to complete a rather complex pose. The humbling part. I kept at it though- and am happy with her results. Anyway, here she is, complete with a rather ornate headpiece. Hope you like her!

Been gone so much lately!!!!

Hello out there to any of you who might still be stopping by. My sincere apologies for not being around much this summer. It's been busy with the normal summer activities, and then on top of that my mom had back surgery about a month ago now. She had post surgery health issues and I spent a couple weeks going back and forth to help out there.

I continue to work in the studio- and will post photos as I can. I did a rather detailed commission piece this summer and the collector has given her permission for me to post work in progress photos of the piece. I will do that soon! Might be fun to see the long process my work goes through.

Back from Alaska!

My husband and I just returned from our trip to Alaska were I was invited to come and teach doll sculpting. It was a great time- a long trip too- but certainly worth it! I am sorry I have been so absent from posting here on my blog, there was much to do to get ready for this trip of a lifetime!

It is absolutely amazingly beautiful in Alaska! Your brain almost doesn't believe what your eyes are showing it. I don't know how to explain it-and a camera is not able to capture it, certainly.
Below is a small iceberg, and as you can see, it is aqua blue. This is the actual color of the ice, it is not a reflection! On the other side of this iceberg there were about a half dozen sea otters, playing with their babies... Of course, the eagles were flying high overhead. It was rainy most of our time there but we still managed to get out and see the country.

This photo is of one of the many glaciers we saw there. They estimate the glaciers in this area are at least 10,000 years old. Just imagine what is frozen in those layers of ice! Typical tourists! Set the camera on a wall, set the auto timer and run like heck to get into the shot! We did have fun--

Lyla --Serenity and Peace--

This is Lyla- loved creating this fairy. I think she instills such a feeling of peace and tranquility when you look at her. The base is a round ball, like they have for putting in bowls as decoration, and then a wood block that I overlayed with gold foil. All the colors came together so nicely!

Amber's Dance

I had this piece listed last week and didn't get back to my blog to update, but thought I would add her photos now anyway. This piece was started months ago- and finally finished in late March. With all the cloudy days, I was fortunate the day I snapped these photos- as the appearance of fire is what I was after. Late afternoon sun streaming into the screen porch offered me the lighting I was hoping for. Very dynamic, isn't it!

Gosh, I love my job.

This is Gwyneth, my second Flower Fairy. I had a lot of fun experimenting with her dress- handpainting on silk with alcohol inks! Then to get the watercolor effects-- all very interesting. The weather is still dreary and cold- windy here so perhaps tomorrow I will have better luck getting good shots of her. These were taken indoors by a window- overcast day. Now great for capturing color, I'm afraid!

I found in the snow! This tiny angel is sitting in a snow angel left behind after a weekend of playful fun in the yard. The look of pure joy on her face is just impossible to resist! You'll look at her and smile, I promise!

After a week away...

There was much going on on ebay this past week. Ebay is making some major changes to their policies and many people are in an uproar over it. There was a week long boycott last week and I am grateful its over. Well, some folks are continuing with it- but I don't see the logic in that. After all, ebay will be able to do as it wishes- and we are there as players.
At any rate, I spent the week creating Daigon, an Avairy fairy! She is adorned in brilliant feathers and rich fabrics of blue and purple. Loved doing her- trying some different techniques in the process. Hope everyone is safe and warm! Still pretty cold here. Hoping for spring!

Who could resist the innocent little face? I couldn't. Meet Kaela, the first Flower Fairy of 2008. What fun it is to create these whimsical little beings. Her garment is made from silk petals, (of course!) and her little undergarment is reminiscent of the bubble suits of the 1950's. I am dating myself now, that's for sure!

Wild Fairy--

This week I bring to you, Qitarah, wild and free-a Feral Fairy. It was fun to try something entirely different this time- and she is. Her skin is tanned and she is speckled with hundreds of freckles. Her piercing green eyes seem to look right through you. Beware- she could be lethal!

While these photos don't depict it- the weather here is still so darn cold, it's nearly impossible to be outdoors for any length of time. Especially with bare hands, trying to focus and hold a camera steady! I'll sure be glad when this terrible cold weather breaks. It's been about 20 below at night. ENOUGH ALREADY! WE GIVE!!!!!

...and these mischievous little imps are EVERYWHERE. Snow Pixies love to frolic in the snow-they make icy spots on the sidewalks so you have to be careful! You can hear them giggling when someone falls down. NOT very nice. Oh well, they migrate north when our weather warms up. Poor Canadians! ;)

Hello! Well, it's a new year and I already feel like I've accomplished a great deal! I finally got my website all updated- it was March when I did it last. No excuses- just didn't take the time to finish it. It went well this time, no problems so maybe I won't be so intimated next time. That's why blogging is so much easier! :)

I have a new listing starting this evening on ebay- the first for 2008. I am really proud of her. Sharia is her name.

I hope you like her! She wears tiny gold leaves temporarily over her breasts since ebay frowns on showing bare breasts. Here is a photo of her without those leaves....

I am also making progress on my commission list. I will write more about that later...

Well, here's my cheery bunch after dinner but before gifts were opened. They are patient for a little while, but it seems Grandma is always pushing the limits! At least little Jamison is still smiley!

Seriously, we had a great time- all the kids were here for the weekend and it was sure fun! Love seeing the little ones with their packages- but truthfully, the big kids seem to have just as much fun!

She waited many weeks for me to come back to her as she stood patiently on my desk. I think she was worth waiting for! I am including a couple photos of her before she was dressed. I fully sculpt my work even if they are going to be costumed. It just seems right to do it that way...

With the Holidays fast approaching...

...and in true form for myself, I am trying to see just how much I can jam into one month! Typical, I guess! Everyone seems to be extra busy this time of year.

We got snow early- and it's been cold enough to keep it on the ground too so this is even more incentive for me to stay home and stay focused. Happily so!

This week I have two listings on ebay, Caleigh, a fairy that sits on the edge of a glass star....

And Sister Mary Martha, AKA Sister Mary Motorin' who has managed to secure a motorcycle for the Convent! What fun, huh? Gosh, I love my "job"! Have a good week- I will be back soon...

Just home from the ADSG Meet and Greet in Indy!

Just got home last night from our get together in Indianapolis- the first ever Meet and Greet for artists and collectors from the Art Dolls Sculpture Group through ebay. We had a blast! There were 16 of us altogether. I was asked to teach mini classes at this event- so it was busy and lots of sharing took place. Several of the gals didn't want their photos taken- so one of our organizers came up with the perfect solution. Below you will see our official 'Group Photo'. Too funny~

And here is a photo of Helen and me- Helen is an avid fairy collector and has about 30 of my fairies in her collection. I tease her and tell her I think she 'stopped counting' at 30. She has over 400 one of a kind sculptures from several different artists- a very avid collector indeed! Such fun and so nice of her to come and join us It was great to put faces and voices to the typed words we have been sharing for a few years now...Thanks everyone!

Here we are again...struggling to get the best photos we can. Of course light and wind and weather plays such a vital part. This is Sebastia, and she is a Sentry Fairy, guiding the young fae of the forest safely along their way. She raises her lantern high- lighting the path for a safe journey.

This week I am happy to bring Thaddea to ebay for a three day listing- I love her pose and the overall feel of peace with this sculpture. She gazes at an abstract Swarovski crystal. Really pretty cut on this pendant. Also, her tresses are two colors of that mohair I dyed- boy, is that stuff fine. Now I realize just how soft and luxurious it is! Love it- find it hard to go back and use the other stuff I have bought. Oh well--have a safe weekend everyone!

Did you ever wonder how the trees got their beautiful fall color?
Well, I found out! This morning while on my walk through the woods, I was enjoying the splendor of the rich and vibrant fall colors. I wondered how such a phenomenon could take place- nature is always such a mystery. Then..... suddenly right there on the forest floor, I saw her! This tiny sprite with her cheeks all rosy from the crisp morning air- busily attending to her task! A wee bit sloppy she was, but she was certainly getting her duties doneI She told me she is called Pippi... I thought it fitting for this tiny little painter...

A few weeks ago I showed you Genevieve and her little frog. She was making a wish for a dream come true. This week the story continues when Sir Arion appears like magic, right before her eyes!

If you click on the small photo to the left, you can read their story on the second page of the listing. I don't do many male sculpts but really enjoyed creating Sir Arion. He has leather-like riding pants and real kid leather boots.

Busy busy--still busy as a bee! Commission Chat!

Spent the whole week finishing up commission number 2. I will now be starting #3 and happily so. A little explanation....

Last year I had a good number of commissions on my waiting list. In the dead of the previous winter we decided early spring would be the time to tear into the kitchen and remodel. My house is laid out in such a way that doing that involved the whole first floor of our home--which includes my studio, just off the kitchen area. WHAT A MESS......
This went on for several months....

Then in the fall, my dear daughter in law called in distress, she was told she needed to be on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy; three months. Well, they have a two year old, Ella (now three!). We all know how THAT goes.

Gramma to the rescue.

Actually, I enjoyed it immensely, but getting ready to go and stay for a week at the time was a challenge. Needless to say, that commission list didn't get any attention AT ALL.

All ended well, even though the baby was born a month early. I was lucky enough to be invited to be there for his birth. Such a gift! Jamison Allen Wood was born at the end of November. That led right into the holiday season!

And so it goes...
Also, once I got this blog up and running-- I started the list over with #1. I don't want you to think that after all this time I am only on number 3, actually, it's more like 10, but who's counting, right?

Anyway, I am happily making progress this year, and so far no one is pregnant and we have no more remodeling plans. YEAH. Finally getting finished up with that-that HAS been a 10 year process here. A story for another day...

And this week, that's just what I did. Meet Flitter! She is a dragonfly fairy, floating above her cedar display. Here is a photo of her.

She is sporting some of the mohair I showed you last week- it's short, very shiny and very soft. Perfect for the short hairstyles. I really liked how her wings turned out too-all those holes were burned into the film with a soldering gun. Took hours. Good thing I LOVE MY JOB!

Have a safe holiday weekend! We are going away and I will be back Sunday evening very late. A cousin is getting married on a sunset cruise. Should be fun!

Processing mohair-all part of the job!

This is Taja, the end of the story! Her beautiful tresses are the result of this lengthy process. I couldn't be more pleased! She actually has two colors blended together- for a very natural look.

So this is where it all started....

Tonight I want to share some photos with you of the process of dyeing mohair. It is such a job- but the rewards are tremendous. I did a bit of it a few years ago- then bought some from other sources already colored. That has it's disadvantages though- because you never seem to have just the right color.

I had tibetan lamb (around 60.00) as well as angora mohair that I got from my friend Terry in Australia. I had heard they had the nicest mohair there- and it is true- this fiber she sent me is just the softest and finest I have ever seen. Not cheap though- we now have about 70.00 invested in white ponytails. Anyway, here are some photos showing this very messy (and expensive!!) process!

First, the mohair is brushed, washed and dried and then bundled. I got 70 bundles and this process took me about three days.

Then I laid out plastic, and donned the rubber gloves. I had been buying up several- actually dozens of boxes of haircolor. (approx 150.00) Then I decided that maybe I should have professional haircolor instead- so I enlisted the help of another friend, Debbie. She was a hairdresser before she went into her artwork full time. She sent me a box of several colors- ring up about 80.00 more... MESSY....

Turns out I used all the boxed haircolor- all the professional color AND went back to the store for about 6 MORE boxes of color. Add 50.00.

After the color process was finished, we rinsed. And rinsed, and rinsed... AND RINSED. They are spread out on the washer and dryer...

Then off to the clothesline to dry. Thank goodness it was hot and windy those days. (My hubby was a bit worried what the neighbors would think. :) )

This is a closeup of a tighter curled mohair, also from Terry. Thank you again, Terry! As I said, expensive and time consuming. But, I would say I have nearly a lifetime supply of hair for my sculptures. Except that I did tell Terry I was willing to take more if she gets some! :)

And now I know why they charge about 20.00 an ounce for dyed mohair! I thought about selling some as I was getting started with this- but heck NO. Too much work!!

...since I have been back here to post. Please forgive my absence. We were gone for a while- visiting the kids again and since we returned, I have been working with some mohair that I had bought several months ago. Beautiful mohair from Australia. I also had some Tibetan lamb to work with. Been dyeing it for days now- some great successes, some not so great! I will post some photos when it's all finished- the last batch is drying now.

Back into the studio today- finally back at it! I miss it when I am away....

Had to get a new server this week- for my website as well as my ebay listings. A pain to get it all switched over, but this new system is a dream!

Anyway, it took me the better part of the week to get it all up and running again, so I was late getting my fairy listed. I wouldn't have been able to get her listed anyway until I had the new service activated! But, we did it- all is well, and Elke has arrived!

I started out with an entirely different plan- and ended up with Mariella. She pleased me- I loved her expression. Sad, yet hopeful. I hope you'll like her too!

About the photography here. I think the effects are cool. I took these outdoors in open shade which means light filtering through the branches. I held a matte gray board up at an angle behind the sculpture, allowing the reflections and shadows to dance across the board. It caused the streaking effect and also bounced light off the sculpture.

I think I am going to rig up some stands to hold that board next time, so I don't have to! It was hard to hold the board- and steady the camera all at the same time. Oh, and make sure the breeze didn't blow her off the stand. Fairy wings will catch the wind, you know...

I'm back. Sorry for the time gone, it's been filled with visits from the grandkids! Summertime brings all sorts of fun distractions. I even caught one sitting in my birdbath. It wasn't a bird, either!

Home again- I was gone a few days, doing the promised yardwork and planting for my parents. Glad I still have parents to do yardwork for! Dad will be 80 in 2008. Mom isn't too far behind..

So today I am pulling weeds in my own gardens! Here's a picture of one- And here's my helper. She's not too good at pulling weeds- she'd rather chase the squirrels! Seems her work is never done!
I need to get as much done today- and possibly tomorrow- then it's back to the studio. I'll check in with you again soon!

Boy, where do the days go....

We had our little grandbabies here for a few days. I'll tell you what. They are a lot of work! It's as I always say, there's a reason God dries up our ovaries! WHEW! They are darling, though- gramma is just getting old.

Anyway- once they all cleared out- I got a chance to finish a piece I had started a while ago- this is Zeki- a young male Changling. What fun! I love trying something different- and I really am happy with the way this piece evolved- right down to the mushroom cap as a perch. Worked out great- because I sculpted him first- and baked him- so the mushroom had to be sculpted to fit him. It is build with a wood and expanded wire mesh armature- screwed and epoxy glued together. Very sturdy!

Today we turned the air conditioning on- now I know you folks in the warmer climates don't think that's a big deal, but here in northern Minnesota, it is! I'm happily buying up my bedding plants- need to get them planted now that the danger of frost has passed. You heard me- we can still get frost until the first of June. I'm not kidding! This is my latest project- Sister Mary Julia. "Jumpin' Julia" as the kids call her. Well, not to her face....creating all the folds and flip to her garments was fun! I just love how she turned out. Hope you do too!

Memorial Weekend

I hope everyone is enjoying a little time off this weekend- it's a work weekend here, unfortunately. With my husband's occupation, there's plenty of 'work weekends'. Hello again!

Still getting a feel for this new means of staying in touch. I wanted to let those of you affected by this know that I intend to use this more immediate means of communication to keep you updated on my progress on commissions. Many have requested commissions in the past, and to say I am slow is an understatement.

I have vowed to myself to effectively address this in the coming months. Several unavoidable personal events factored in in 2006, but I am happy to say I have made some good progress in my efforts in 2007. I hope it continues.

My plan is to assign a number to the commission requests- and post here what 'number' I am currently working on, so you'll know when it's YOU! And, by doing it this way, it protects your privacy as well. I hope you'll enjoy this- I think I will too! Above you'll see a commission I just completed....
